Noted essayist and storyteller Robert Louis Stevenson is the pride of Edinburgh, Scotland, having been born in the Scottish capital on Nov. 13, 1850 at 8 Howard Place. However, he spent his growing-up years at 17 Heriot Row. In 1881, Stevenson and his wife briefly visited Perthshire, a visit from which some of his best stories came. Stevenson travelled extensively to look for favorable climate for the throat and lung disease that plagued him almost all his life.
