THE city of Edinburgh was a daunting prospect for a boy of 17, but Robert Louis Stevenson came to know it intimately. He was the same age as his fictional hero David Balfour when he first had the opportunity to explore the city of his birth, venturing alone into the Old Town's dark wynds and closes.

He would use his own experiences to create the young hero of Kidnapped and describe his arrival in the city, marvelling at 'the huge height of the buildings, running up to ten and fifteen storeys, the narrow arched entries that continually vomited ...
