EDINBURGH, said Robert Louis Stevenson, is what Paris ought to be.
Well, he would, wouldn't he. Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, although it is worth noting that he died in the more hospitable climate of Samoa.
In fact, Edinburgh and Paris have a great deal in common. The winding streets of the Marais look very like the old cobbled lanes of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, and the smoky bars hidden up alleyways could be in either city.
There is another similarity: in August, many of the residents in the French and Scottish capitals pack up and head for the hills.
