ROBERT Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped is one of the finest stories ever written about Scotland, its landscape, its people, and its historic divisions; and this is a fine time to revive it, if only because there are contemporary lessons to be learned from the sheer good humour and sweetness of spirit with which Stevenson tackles those ancient tensions between Highlander and Lowlander, Catholic and Protestant, Jacobite and Whig.
