Scots writers snubbed in UK book poll

MANY of Scotland's greatest writers have been snubbed in a competition to find Britain's favourite book.

Only three Scottish writers - JK Rowling, Kenneth Grahame and Robert Louis Stevenson - appear in a shortlist of 100 of Britain's most popular books.

Famous names including Sir Walter Scott, JM Barrie, Lewis Grassic Gibbon and Dame Muriel Spark have all failed to make the list. The competition, The Big Read, organised by the BBC, aims to find the country's most popular books. More than 140,000 people have voted for their favourite work of fiction from a list published at the weekend.
