Any collection of Robert Louis Stevenson's travel writing is a welcome volume, and this selection provides a generous and representative sample of his work. It is intended for the general reader and therefore endnotes are "only included where necessary or helpful" - herein lies the problem. I can't imagine a 'general reader' who doesn't know that Wordsworth was an English poet, yet could identify Sadeler, Henley and Lippo Lippi, as well as fluently translating a smattering of foreign languages.
