WHEN Robert Louis Stevenson wrote his collection of poetry, A Child's Garden of Verses, his lungs were so weak that he was confined to bed, breathing with a respirator and not allowed to speak.
In addition, his arm was in a sling as a precaution against haemorrhage. With his eyesight also at risk, he was obliged to lie in darkness throughout the day.
Out of this nightmare of discomfort and disability came lines like: The world is so full of a number of things I am sure we should all be as happy as kings.
