"The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" made its film debut Friday in a big-budget would-be blockbuster starring Sean Connery.

But the movie is only the latest incarnation of its characters, who all have roots in Victorian literature. The oddball menagerie of heroes was first assembled in a comic book by famed writer Alan Moore.
