Much of what we believe about California was constructed by the authors who wrote about it. Many writers found rest or aggravation or inspiration there, of course. But four in particular _ Robert Louis Stevenson, Jack London, John Steinbeck and Raymond Chandler _ wrote with such insight that their ideas helped form part of the American consciousness. Their observations ranged from the smallest detail to the most universal emotion. And it all happened in California.
