Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish writer of books, poetry, and
essays. He wrote the exciting tale of Treasure Island, about the adventures
of a young boy, Jim Hawkins, and a pirate, Long John Silver, and their
search for treasure.
Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied first to be an engineer, then a lawyer. Instead of entering either profession, he decided to take up writing. He soon became one of the most popular authors of his day.
