Turning Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" into an animated sci-fi feature sounds like such a sure thing you'd think someone would have thought of it a long time ago.

Actually, they did.

"The idea was first proposed 17 years ago," said Ron Clements, co-director of Disney's just-released "Treasure Planet."

"I proposed it myself. At the same meeting I brought up the idea of making an animated feature of `The Little Mermaid.' And you know which one we decided to make."

Putting "Treasure Planet" on the development back burner was probably fortuitous, ...
