It is ironic that it takes a visiting American at Lincoln University to do a major analysis on the best real estate deal for farmers since Samuel Butler arrived in 1860 (Feb 23).

Unfortunately, there is public ignorance nationally about tenure review of the high country, a massive change in the ownership of 2.4 million hectares, 10% of the South Island. Other than millions of dollars in "compensation" going to just 300 farmers for surrendering "unproductive" high country leasehold, and getting 58% of their leasehold land freehold for nothing, there are other serious problems.
