DUBLIN, Ireland — When Ireland elected Mary McAleese as its president, it probably silenced one of its more forceful voices of opinion.
Like her predecessor, Mary Robinson, McAleese is a woman of strong views moving into an office where opinions are to be kept quiet.
McAleese, the first Irish president to come from British-ruled Northern Ireland, is hard to categorize. She is a devout Roman Catholic who disagrees sharply with church teaching on the male-only priesthood; she is a northerner who speaks about her deep affection for Protestants ...
