BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) _ Leaders of Northern Ireland's new assembly sought today to drum up support for a compromise over a blocked Protestant march, but a spokesman for the marchers said he feared a lethal clash between Protestant hard-liners and police and soldiers.

Five police officers were hospitalized late Thursday as supporters of the thwarted marchers, massed near a rural church outside Portadown, 25 miles west of Belfast, hurled ball bearings from catapults and threw fireworks.
