Northern Ireland would experience "a new spirit of partnership and cooperation" if the IRA were to disarm and disband in support of the province's peace accord, Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern declared Thursday.

Ahern met British Prime Minister Tony Blair, his close partner in fostering compromise in the British territory, for about 45 minutes at Blair's Downing Street office.
