Author Edgar Allan Poe's story 'The Cask of Amontillado' is a tale of revenge that has divided several critics who contend that the main character, Montresor, does not achieve the criteria required for the perfect act of vengeance against Fortunato that he outlines in the beginning of the story. It is argued, however, that Fortunato literally and figuratively gets the last laugh on Montresor as he is entombed for he knows what they will encounter in the next world.
