Edgar Allan Poe was one of America's greatest writers. He wrote poems,
essays, short stories, and criticism. Poe was born in Boston. His
parents were both actors. His father left the family when Poe was
only a year old, and his mother died when he was 3 years old. John
Allan, a Virginia merchant, and his wife raised Poe as a foster child.
While he was at college, Poe received little money to live on and
turned to gambling. He quarreled with his foster father and was forced
to leave college because of his debts. Poe started writing and published
