It was a shrewd move of Mahler's to dedicate his Eighth Symphony to his beautiful young wife Alma.
Having presented her with a wonderful bouquet in the form of the love-letter which was the tender Adagietto of his Fifth Symphony (later to become ubiquituous as the Death in Venice theme-music), he had subsequently rather spoiled things with matters surrounding his next symphony and the Kindertotenlieder.
