Beer and the music profession have a traditional affinity, so Christopher Hogwood's description of the "period performance" movement as akin to the Campaign for Real Ale is refreshingly direct.

As one of the movement's pioneers in this country, Hogwood presided over performances on antique instruments - or modern reproductions of them - which presented the listener with a whole new array of sounds: lean, rangy, abrasive, and totally unlike the fulsome vibrato-ridden readings to which listeners were accustomed.
