Tonight we welcome back one of the region's most illustrious homegrown musicians, when Sir Edward Downes, Walsall-born and a graduate of Birmingham University (he once worked on the buses to eke out a living), comes to Symphony Hall to conduct the CBSO.
The programme is a highly attractive 19th-century compilation, with Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture followed by Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. In the second half Boris Berezovsky is the soloist in the greatest of all piano concertos, Brahms' no.2 in B-flat (7.30pm, repeated Saturday 7pm).
