Birmingham Conservatoire's week-long student-promoted 'Music Xtra 2004' festival reaches its climax tomorrow evening with an absorbing programme performed by the Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra and Thallein Ensemble.

Completing his second term as Conservatoire conductor-in-residence, the hugely experienced Lionel Friend is on the podium for the concert, reinforcing an already strong and rewarding relationship he has built up with the students. How does he draw such enthusiasm out of his charges?
