Even though the call is to Boston in patrician New England, it still comes as a massive surprise to find such a perfect English accent answering the phone.

But Benjamin Zander, conductor and world-renowned American-style motivator, who has lived in the Massachusetts city for well over 30 years, was born in England, Buckinghamshire, to be precise, and educated at Uppingham and St Paul's school.

A gifted cellist, he was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at the age of 12.
