With his visits to this country fast approaching the double-figure mark, Moldovan operatic baritone Petru Racovita is resignedly philosophical about the amount of touring he has to undertake.

Conversing with me via e-mail, and with the help of an interpreter - a first for this writer - he admitted: 'Indeed, I do seem to be abroad more than at home. On average I am not on tour for only four months in a year.
