Mar. 15--On a recent Wednesday morning, a group of women seated in a circle listened as Violette Newton spoke in her sitting room about the craft poetry. Newton, who served as Texas Poet Laureate from 1973 to 1974, was giving a mini-lesson, telling her disciples about how she's studied sonnets, particularly those of Edna St. Vincent Millay.
