    If ever we needed a touch of spring, it's now. Even though I shudder at most children's poetry books, I gravitated to ``The Earth is Painted Green: A Garden of Poems About Our Planet'' (Scholastic, $16.95), a lush celebration of the green seasons. Edited by Barbara Brenner and warmly illustrated by S.D. Schindler, the uneven poetry selections range from Edna St. Vincent Millay's gorgeous, alliterative ``Counting Out Rhyme'' (``Silver bark of beech, and sallow/Bark of yellow birch and yellow/Twig of willow'') to David McCord's rather mundane ``Five Chants'' (``But everytime I climb a ...
