There is a long and impressive line of criticism that takes as its subject the undoubted association between Marlowe's The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus and Lutheran doctrine. Clifford Davidson, in a 1962 article entitled "Dr. Faustus of Wittenberg," points out the similarities between some of the writings of Philip Melanchthon--a disciple of Martin Luther--and many speeches of Faustus.
