Anne Dowriche, who authored 'The French History' in 1589, might be the influence behind Christopher Marlowe's writing. Her work, which predates Marlowe's, features a lead historical Machiavellian character, Catherine de Medici, a figure who might have influenced Marlowe. Dowriche, whose polemical style of writing has been dismissed by critics that include A.G. Dickens and Paul H. Kocher, might also have been the influence behind such female historians as Elizabeth Cary.
