From there, it's no great stretch to transpose elements of the play to the present day.
In Rupert Goold's free adaptation, the medieval study where Faustus is busy conjuring demons neatly snaps shut to reveal a Hoxton studio and Brit Art enfants terrible Jake and Dinos Chapman (Stephen Noonan and Jonjo O'Neill) planning to "rectify" Goya etchings of war and torture by painting the faces of victims as clowns and puppies.
