Peter Whelan has written successful plays about writers and artists as far apart as Christopher Marlowe (in The School of Night) and the pottery-designer Clarice Cliff (in The Bright and Bold Design). Now, in The Earthly Paradise, at the Almeida, he has turned his attention to the Pre-Raphaelites. The action opens in 1871 at Kelmscott, the Oxfordshire manor where William Morris and his wife Janey have installed themselves along with Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It closes two years later: the idyll - or what was meant to have been one - has broken up, and everyone is moving on.
