The Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe tells the tale of the tragic Dr. Faustus, supposed to be the wisest man in the world, learned in Aristotle, the laws of Justinian, the teachings of the Bible and all the classics of Greece and Rome. But for all his knowledge, Faustus seeks even greater knowledge than men might learn by their studies, and foolishly resolves to sell his soul to Lucifer to learn the dark arts of evil. In this manner his pride overtakes the humility needed for any scholar, and thus he falls from grace.
