Doctor Faustus: Doctor Faustus is the central figure in the play and
dominates the entire action. He is a man who has mastered human learning, but
who, like Icarus, attempts to go beyond human limitations in a quest for
knowledge. Having risen from humble origins to a position of eminence at the
University of Wittenberg, Faustus is yet not content. He finds law, theology,
medicine, and philosophy too "illiberal". Faustus desires the freedom (the
Latin word, liberus) to pursue the study of necromancy, or black magic.
