Edward Verrall Lucas 1868-1938, English author and critic. For several years he was assistant editor of
Punch.
He wrote many volumes of gently satirical essays and travel books, including
Old Lamps for New
(1911),
Saunterer's Rewards
(1933), and
Only the Other Day
(1936). He is chiefly remembered, however, for his biography of Charles Lamb (1905) and his collection of the letters of Charles and Mary Lamb (1903-5). Of his several novels,
Over Bemerton
(1908) is considered his best.
