Charles Lamb was forever fighting the nuisances of the city: panhandlers and loiterers who sometimes harassed customers of his service station in Northwest Washington. He plastered blunt signs in bold black lettering all over his Amoco station at 1617 14th St. NW to discourage such activity.
On Monday, the signs did little to dissuade a brazen gunman, who fatally wounded Lamb during a robbery.
