Munden, Joseph Shepherd
(1758–1832), English comedian, who after several years' hard work in the provinces joined the company at Covent Garden in 1790. His first outstanding success was as Old Dornton in the initial production of Holcroft's The Road to Ruin (1792). He was the favourite actor of Charles Lamb , who left an admirable description of him, and seems to have been particularly admired in drunken scenes, for which he invented new ‘business’ at every performance.
