Rudyard Kipling, one of the most popular Victorian poets, wrote several memorable works about military life. One of my favorites is titled "Tommy," which was the common slang term for a British soldier. Ink must have been really cheap back then, because Victorian poets often went on at great length. Therefore, I include only excerpts from the poem here:
I went into a public-'ous to get a pint o'beer,
The publican'e up an'sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' gigled fit to die,
I outs into the street again, an' to myself sez ...
