The British writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India. India
was part of the British Empire at the time. Kipling glorified the
empire in many of his works, but he also wrote with sympathetic understanding
about the people and stories of India.
Kipling was sent to England to be educated when he was only 6. At the age of 17, he returned to India and went to work as a newspaper reporter.
