WASHINGTON Rudyard Kipling, not this awkward scrivener, should be writing this column.
The classic lyricist of "If," the most tantalizing word in the English language, would be best-suited to tell the story of Sunday's 10-9 Bears loss to the Redskins.
The Bears would have won if Brad Muster had not lost his first fumble of the season . . . if Kevin Butler hadn't hit the upright . . . if Jay Hilgenberg had not been flagged as an ineligible receiver downfield, etc.
If any of these "ifs" had fallen the Bears' way, Mike Ditka, as he said, would have been telling jokes instead of looking so ...
