A counter-pointing of John Keats' poem 'If by Dull Rhymes' and Albrecht Durer's etching 'Man Drawing a Reclining Woman,' in the context of Foucault's theory of power, reveals the preoccupation of both these works with gender roles and scientific enquiry. Durer uses the wood engraving to draw connections between aggressive masculinity and scientific enquiry and passive femininity and imprisonment. Keats' departure from the strict structure of the sonnet can be read as a challenge of female objectification.
