John Keats's 'The Eve of St. Agnes' has been compared to Edmund Spenser's 'The Faerie Queene,' but never to Spenser's 'Epithalamion.' In several respects, 'The Eve of St. Agnes' shares many details that carry a striking resemblance to 'Epithalamion.' Both poems begin with a bridegroom's call to his love. Both poems describe weddings of similarly modest brides attended by angels and decked in virginal colors but for the passionate coloration of their blushing cheeks. Finally, both poems culminate in the consummation of the wedding by a beautiful bridegroom who appears as a star.
