Keats' difficulty with critics during his own lifetime has received great
attention largely because the poet died young. There is tremendous sentimental
appeal, of course, in the story of a young genius killed by the malevolence of
ignorant critics, and when such a story is circulated by another poet of the
stature of Shelley it becomes virtually irresistible. (Shelley, both in a
letter to the editor of The Quarterly Review and in "Adonais," his elegy for
