The quasi-religious theories of Karl Marx have attracted millions of followers. It's too bad the theories were so inherently flawed.
History is the chronicle of mankind's journey. It's an epic of progress, but also of suffering, class struggle, and the exploitation of man by man. Religions offer an explanation for the human experience, as well as personal and tribal redemption for adherents. Similarly, secular "religions" such as Communism look to a phalanx of "saints" who will establish an alternate utopia.
