China's Communist Party, once the most rigidly orthodox in the socialist world, publicly conceded the unthinkable on December 7: MArxism is obsolete and not up to the job of creating a modern China.

A front-page editorial in the People's Daily, the party newspaper, formally acknowledged that behind the increasingly bold capitalist initiatives being launched by strong man Deng Xiaoping is the conviction that the theories of Communism's founders are outdated.
