KARL Marx, architect of communism, has been voted the greatest philosopher of all time.

The German- born thinker won 28 per cent of the vote of more than 30,000 listeners on Melvyn Bragg's Radio 4 show In Our Time - coming first in a list of ten contenders.

Marx's works, The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital, encouraged revolution - most notably in Russia and China.

But while the avowed intention of his creed was overthrowing capitalism and creating a workers' paradise, the suffering and bloodshed caused by communist regimes was hideous.
