THE Pere Lachaise cemetery has a list of dearly departed to rival the greatest graveyards in the world.

Alongside Morrison, Chopin, Wilde and Piaf lie the writers Moliere, Marcel Proust and Honore de Balzac, opera diva Maria Callas and the actors Yves Montand and Simone Signoret.

Karl Marx's daughter Laura and her husband Paul Lafargue, who committed suicide in 1911, have been laid to rest in the cemetery along with the Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani and his lover Jeanne Herbuterne.
