Denizens of the Lower East Side have lately noticed that some neighborhood
VIPs have gone missing; namely, Karl Marx, Frederick Engels and Ferdinand
Lasalle.
The socialist icons' faces once adorned the facade of the old Forward
newspaper building at 175 East Broadway, which has served, in various eras,
as the central address of the Jewish East Side, a Chinese church and, in
its current incarnation, a soon-to-be-opened residence of luxury
condominium lofts.
