Julian Hawthorne, son of Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of America's great writers, was an author himself and a regular contributor to the Pasadena Star-News in the 1920s. He is pictured above in a photo from the collection of the Library of Congress. Each week, Hawthorne wrote an essay of reminiscences for the Star-News about authors and artists he had known. He was honored on his 85th birthday with a dinner at the Huntington Hotel. Upton Sinclair was one of the speakers and tributes were read from George Bernard Shaw, Sinclair Lewis, H.L.
