In a newly discovered letter, Washington Irving (1783-1859) wrote the publisher Charles Scribner to thank him for his copy of Cyclopaedia of American Literature and to praise its contributions as follows:(1)

To Charles Scribner Esq Dear Sir

I should have thanked you earlier for the copy of the Cyclopedia of American History which you have had the kindness to send me, but I have remained in town on the hands of my nephew, so that I have but recently received it.(2)
