Sep. 28--Chasing Washington Irving is no easy task. Since 1993, Jon Dresser, a retired airline technical worker, has been plotting what he believes was the course of Irving's trek through Oklahoma in the 1830s. Irving, who wrote "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle," is thought by many historians to be one of the first white men to explore and document Indian Territory. Irving traveled with Henry Leavitt Ellsworth, who was appointed by the federal government to facilitate the removal of American Indian tribes to Oklahoma.
