In a newly discovered letter, Washington Irving (1783-1859) wrote George Henry, declining a dinner invitation and praising the correspondent's newly acquired permission to paint a set of views of Windsor Castle. The letter, which is in the University of Virginia Library and is published here for the first time, is as follows: (1)

My dear Sir,

I regret that I cannot accept your kind invitation to dine with you on Thursday next, as I have invited a gentleman from New York to pass that day with me in the country. (3)
