I have been dead a long time--some 146 years now. But my spirits live on, particularly in the Hudson River valley of New York state, where I wrote my stories. At Halloween time, folks often retell my famous tale of a headless spirit. Why, thanks to that story, the village of North Tarrytown, N.Y., officially changed its name in 1996 to Sleepy Hollow. A little farther north, the Rip Van Winkle Bridge spans the Hudson River in the Catskill Mountains, which still echo with my spirits.
